What is Paper Roll Slitter Rewinder Machine
The paper slitting machine needs to perform fixed length slitting processing on the entire roll or sheet of raw materials, such as plastic packaging materials, packaging cartons, steel plates, films, leather, wood chips, etc., all of which require fixed length slitting control. The cutting length can be continuously set. If there is an error in the actual cutting length, it is easy to calibrate it by setting parameters. How the Slitting Works
There are three general functions that a slitter rewinder performs in fixed order. To begin the process, the already rolled paper (or other material) must be unwound to pass through the slitter rewinder in a single layer. As it passes through the machine, it is slit by one of a number of different cutting methods into strips of the desired thickness. Once the material has been slit to the finished, market-ready dimensions, it is rewound into sellable rolls.
The actual cutting of the material can be done in a number of different ways, depending mostly on the material being cut. The oldest form of cutting, called score cutting, involved slicing the material between a relatively dull blade and a hard surface. This method is beneficial for cutting adhesives (like various forms of tape), especially those with one sticky and one dry side. Although this method is quick and easy to set up, it is risky to use on many materials. It can potentially cause an excessive amount of dust when used with paper, stretching and warping with used with films, and cracking when used with hard plastics.
The second easiest cutting method to set up is razor blade cutting. It is also the most economical method. It uses a positioned blade often suspended over the area through which the sheet is feed. As the material is pulled across a drum or series of drums, it is drawn against the blade, which extends downward into either an empty space or a groove in one of the drums. This method cannot be used to cut heavy, abrasive, or rigid materials. Additionally, when used at high speeds, the friction between the blade and the material can heat the blade, which can cause beading along the edges of some materials like films.
Shear cutting is the most accurate slitting method, and it can be used against heavier, thicker, more rigid materials such as thicker films, foils, papers, and laminates. The defining characteristic of shearing cutting is that it uses two blades, usually rotating. The material is pulled between these two blades which cut the materials from above and below, similar to the way a pair of open scissors could be guided through paper.

The process of slitting steel involves wide steel coils being fed through a slitter machine, which cuts the material into narrow strips. From this, the cut strips (also referred to as strands) are then recoiled to create a narrow slit coil.
The mechanism used for the slitting process is often referred to as a slitter, a slitting machine or a slitter rewinder. To put things simply, the main role of a slitting machine is to convert (slit) papers, film and foil materials so that large rolls of these materials can be cut into narrower rolls.
A slitting machine consists of three main parts; the unwind, the slitter and the rewind. By feeding a large roll of your chosen material through the slitter's unwind, your material will then unwind and be slit into various widths, before being rewound into cores of various widths.

Knives and Blades for Slitter Rewinders
The cutting technique in plastic film slitting and rewinding machines is usually longitudinal, hence the use of rotary knives or industrial razor blades. These are the most straightforward type of knives used in slitter rewinders. They are essentially fixed blades that the material is pulled over. How to Choose and Maintain Slitter Blades




Blade angle depends on the material being cut and the desired edge quality. Optimal choice of cutting angle for razor slitting is 45 degrees, shear cutting - 90 degrees.
Blades must always be sharp to maintain optimum cutting performance. Keep a full stock of new replacement blades for continuous production.
Match the blades to the thickness of the material to be cut. Depending on the type of material being cut on the slitter, additives, and cutting speed, the thickness of the blades plays a major role.
Material elasticity influences tension control requirements. Higher elasticity may require more precise tension control to prevent stretching or wrinkling.
Surface treatments, coatings, or finishes may affect cutting performance.
Ideally, tension variation should be kept within ±5% of the target tension to ensure consistent slitting and rewinding.
Match the blades to the thickness of the material to be cut. Depending on the type of material being cut on the slitter, the additives in the film, and the cutting speed, the thickness and coating of the blades plays a major role. If the film cutting speed is too fast, the blade edges will heat up and the film will melt, significantly reducing the quality of the product. Blade coating can reduce edge heating from friction.
In shear slitting there are 4 important factors influencing the quality cut, which are blades overlap (0.50 to 0.75 mm) ,cut point, side loading pressure, cant angle (0.25 degrees for films), slitter and web speed, blade profiles.
